I had the soundtrack, my mom made me a costume to wear in the pool, etcetera. But I was born in the early 80s, and I'm pretty sure The Little Mermaid was the first movie I have a concrete memory of seeing in the theater. Most mermaid stories (until this year!) have been for younger girls. what's your favorite mermaid story (or stories)? Did any of them influence this book? Well, part of the reason I wrote one is because I always felt like mermaids were not well-trod territory. My first book was a little more unusual and it didn't get all this accidental thematic promotion, that's for sure!Īnyway, I like mermaid novels, and there really have been very few published over the decades, so I guess it's not a problem for there to be a decent stack releasing at once.ĭefinitely not for me! And I would totally read a book about winged messengers, too. If you look at any Amazon or Goodreads listing for a mermaid novel, all the other mermaid novels tend to come up as 'You might also like.' Bloggers do posts on the popularity of mermaid novels, etcetera. They all sort of get promoted together by default. But I've come over time to think of it as a good thing. Anyway!Īs for your question, I was a little bummed at first when I realized there were so many other mermaid novels coming out at once. I could probably write a whole other novel just about the adventures of the winged messengers.

Culturally, they are a very intellectual race, and sort of the 'Pony Express' of the area, I guess, because in this pre-railroad, pre-automobile society the winged folk can carry around messages and parcels very quickly. I tried to make them as believable as I possibly could. They are built more like bats, with wings instead of arms, and although scientifically humans can't actually fly, they use a combination of magical 'harnessing the wind' and gliding. But actually, this world has just plain old flying people.

I've seen quite a few people writing about the book assume he is, and it's a reasonable assumption with so many angel YA. Well, I should start by saying that Alander is not an angel. Do you think that's a good thing or a bad thing? When you wrote this story about a star-crossed love between a mermaid and an angel, you probably had no idea that it would be coming out in the Year of the Mermaid (and that the Year of the Angels is still somewhat ongoing.).
